Brick Grinding in NYC
A raised or uneven brick isn't always a rip-and-replace job. Often it can be ground flush in an hour or two.
We handle brick grinding across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, and every job starts with a free onsite look.

Why Bricks Shift and Lift
Bricks move because the ground under them moves. Tree roots push up from below. Winter freeze and thaw shifts the base. Water washes out the sand or gravel a brick was set on. Any of these can leave one brick sitting higher than the ones around it.
This is especially common on older NYC properties, where brick paths and courtyards can be 50 years old or more.
Even a small height difference, about a quarter inch or so, is enough to catch a shoe or a stroller wheel. On a stoop, entryway, or walkway people use every day, that's a real liability, not just an eyesore.
Grinding vs. Replacing
Replacing a brick section
Replacing a brick section means pulling it up, redoing the base, and resetting the bricks. It works, but it takes longer and costs more.
Grinding the high brick
Grinding is different. We use a diamond grinder to shave down the high brick until it's flush with the ones around it. No digging, no new material, no waiting for anything to set. For a lot of trip hazards, that's all it takes.
It's not permanent forever, the ground can still shift again later, but it buys years of safe, level use for a fraction of the cost of tearing the area out.
How Much Does Brick Grinding Cost in NYC?
Here's what our grinding work typically runs:
| Type of Work | Typical Price Range |
|---|---|
| Single trip hazard (one raised brick) | $200 – $500 |
| Small area, 2–4 spots | $400 – $1,000 |
| Walkway or garden path (several uneven spots) | $800 – $2,500 |
| Full courtyard or patio leveling | $1,500 – $5,000 |
| Stoop and entryway grinding | $300 – $1,200 |
| Violation-related grinding with documentation | $500 – $2,000 |
| Mortar joint grinding for repointing | $3 – $8 per linear ft |
| Brick reset (when grinding won't hold) | $25 – $60 per brick |
Grinding is priced by how many spots need work, not by a flat project rate, so we give you a written price once we thoroughly inspect the bricks in person.
Two Kinds of Brick Grinding
Brick grinding covers two different jobs, and we do both.
Surface Grinding
Surface grinding levels a raised or uneven brick in a walkway, patio, stoop, or courtyard so it sits flush with the surface around it. This is the trip hazard fix.
Joint Grinding
Joint grinding is different. It's how we remove old, hardened mortar before repointing a brick wall or chimney. The grinder cuts out the failed mortar so a fresh joint can go in. If that's what you need, our brick pointing page covers the full repointing process.
Tell us which one you're dealing with and we'll come take a look either way.
When Grinding Isn't the Right Fix
Grinding only works on the surface. If a brick is cracked all the way through, chipped badly, or the sand base underneath has washed out completely, grinding won't hold up long term. In those cases, we'll tell you honestly that a section needs to be reset or replaced instead.
We'd rather grind what can be ground and replace what needs replacing, not talk you into the wrong fix for the job. Where a section does need rebuilding, our masonry crews handle that side of the work too.
25 Years of Doing This Right
We've been grinding, resetting, and replacing brick and concrete across NYC for 25 years.
We're a licensed local contractor with full insurance, and every estimate starts with someone actually looking at the brick, not guessing from a description over the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most trip hazard jobs take an hour or two per spot. A larger walkway with several uneven bricks might take most of a day. We'll give you a real time estimate during the onsite visit, once we've seen how many spots need work.
A little, at first. Grinding exposes a slightly lighter, rougher patch where material was removed. It usually blends in within a season as it weathers, and it's a fair trade for a flat, safe surface. If appearance matters a lot to you, tell us, and we'll talk through whether resetting the brick is a better option.
It's a long-term fix, not necessarily a permanent one. If the ground underneath keeps shifting, a brick can rise again after a few years. Most of our grinding work holds up well, but we won't tell you it'll never move again, since that depends on what's happening under the surface, not just on the brick itself.
Both. Some jobs are one bad brick by a front step. Others are a whole courtyard or garden path with several uneven spots. We price it based on what we actually see, not a flat rate per project.
If the uneven brick is part of what caused a violation, yes, grinding is often part of the fix. We've handled plenty of violation-related work over the years and know what inspectors look for. Bring the violation notice to the estimate and we'll factor it in.
Almost never. Grinding down a brick doesn't add material or change the structure, so it's usually not the kind of work that needs a permit. If your project is part of something bigger, like a full walkway rebuild, we'll tell you if that changes anything.
It's louder than a quiet afternoon, but shorter than most repairs. Grinders kick up dust, so we use water to keep it down and clean up when we're done. Most jobs are finished the same day, so the disruption is short.
